This verse has broken my heart.
Adam and Eve had chosen independence from God, and immediately, in their fallen state, out of sinful fear, they try to cover themselves with fig leaves. They realize they are naked and vulnerable and ashamed. Perfect, loving relationship between God and themselves has been severed.
I see God, a heartbroken father, in mercy and love, leaning down and clothing them in better clothes. He clothes their sinfulness with skins of animals. Better clothing. He is still working, still loving, still interceding for their own good, despite their rebellious, foolish hearts. And one day, one day, as he covers their shame with better clothes, he whispers through his merciful actions, I will fix this.
And all of heaven cries.
